I need a flower/herb name that begins with the letter K.?

Its for an afghan I'm making for my mom-in-law. On the chart, it appears to be similar to an amaryllis or a lily. The flower is pink.

Thanks everyone!

I need a flower/herb name that begins with the letter K.?
Kaffir Lily - Schizostylis coccinea, is the only answer that meets your qualifications, lily and pink, in fact many shades of pink. Clivia miniata is also known as a Kaffir lily but I've never seen a pink one, only orange and yellow. RScott
Reply:It sounds like you are describing the Kaffir Lily.

Check out the info here:

Here are some other flowers beginning with the letter K.

Kalanchoe

Kadsura

Kalmia

Kalmiopsis

Kahili Ginger

Kerria

Kolkwitzia

Reply:A Red Hot Poker is of the Lily family and it's official name is Kniphofia. Is that what you are looking for? Red Hot Pokers come in a variety of bright colors and has flower spikes.

The only other one I can think of would be Kalmia angustifolia, or Sheep Laurel.

Does anyone know how to get a picture of a mythical flower but the name of ambrosia?

it is a type of flower that looks like the leaves are made out of jelly, I have seen it only once in a TV show.

Does anyone know how to get a picture of a mythical flower but the name of ambrosia?
It was interesting to read (thanks to you) that:

"Many modern scholars, including Danny Staples, relate ambrosia to the hallucinogenic mushroom Amanita muscaria."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrosia

Until know, I knew only that Vikings used such mushrooms.

Good photo at http://www.everyherbal.com/pic1/amanita_...

I am also surprised that this very toxic mushroom is freely marketed in Internet.

Can someone tell me the name of this flower?

Its upper petals are long and slender with yellow on in inner half and an orangish-pink on the outer half. There are reddish brown spots on the upper petals that are concentrated along the spine and the outer edges. The lower petals are mostly pink with a yellow-green center and a very round heart shape. I realize that this is not much to go on but I appreciate any input at all. My guess is it's some kind of orchid.

Can someone tell me the name of this flower?
what does the plant itself look like? that would be a better guess. orchids usually have psuedo-bulbs. they are areas where they store water. there are about 10,000 speices of orchids and many more hybrids so you would need pictures and a botanist specializing in orchids to get anwywhere. if it helps orchids have 3 sepals which are outside petals. they are a little thicker and are usually held about 12 o clock, 4:30 and 7:30. they have thicker petals at about 2 oclock and 10. they usually have a center structure which is made up of a lip that hangs at about 6 oclock or opposite the top sepal and a column that houses the reproductive parts.

good luck.
Reply:It sounds like a type of Phragmipedium orchid or a Cymbidium (if the leaves are about a foot long, and there are more than three blooms per stem). Please note that there are many species and varieties of each of these Genera, so these pictures are only a start. Here are some links to pictures:

Reply:Do your reasearch into names that already exist. Then research the companies that grow and breed roses - eg David Austin Roses. If they feel your husband did something noteworthy enough (gave loads to charity or something) then they might consider it. Unfortunatly you may not have much luck if he didnt.

Also, the rose probs wouldnt come out for a few year while they grow stock

What is the name of a deep orange flower with purple pistils?

The flower was growing in my backyard. It has a touch of purple at the base of each petal. The stem is thick and has hairs on it. The leaves have some fines hairs on them and they also have little needles at the end of each section. I assume it is to protect it from being eaten by bugs or animals.

What is the name of a deep orange flower with purple pistils?
It does sound like a poppy but it would help if you described the flower shape %26amp; leaf shape. Poppies have very distinct flower shape, the leaves are tissue thin, the seed head forms an inverted cone with a "hat", and the buds are very fat and egg shaped.

If it is a poppy as everyone seems to think then this website should have a picture.
Reply:Honeysuckle!
Reply:sounds like a species of lily - we have them here in australia, but sorry, I don't know what they're called
Reply:HI, I think poppy is correct. But, I am not going to try to answer your question, I am going to advise that you also describe leaf and flower SHAPE!!! That is very important, also the general area of what country and climate you like in! I guarantee you will get better answers! Woogha/Bugsie
Reply:it could be a poppy, i have some in my yard, and they look like what you descirbe.
Reply:Oriental Poppies- they are a perrenial plant and are quite hardy. Stems exude a milky substance when cut that is an irritant. Because of this substance the flowers don't work well for cut flowers.

What kind of flower is this?

I am looking for the name of the flower that is orange and grows on a stick kind of stem, you see them every where from peoples yards to the side of the road. They have a grass like part at the bottom and they also come in yellow and red, but orange is my favorite.

Names that incorporated "moon" were popular for girls. So were names that were inspired by earth forces. Sky(e), Rain(e), Autumn, Lilac, Daisy, Luna, Sunshine, and Harmony are all names some of my friends gave their daughters during that time. Not too long ago I ran into a 30-ish woman named Justice. Reply:I think it depends on the vibe of your shop and how you want people to perceive it. SPRING FLING would be a great name for a shop that was full of flirty flowers and cutesy arrangements. DOWN TO EARTH would be a great name for a more naturalistic and organic florist that sold more flowering plants than bouquets of daisys. I think the first thing you should do is look at where the shop is and who will be shopping there. Creating a vibe that is too young or too old, too stodgy or too chic for the people you will be selling to will not serve either of you very well. Look around your neighborhood and your heart and I'm sure you will see what the shop wants to be and the name will come to you. Good luck!

"Black Flowers There are lots of spooky black flowers .... Now’s a good time to plant tulips like ‘Queen of Night’, ‘Black Diamond’ and ‘Black Parrot’, which are very deep purple. For sunny spots there’s the columbine Aquilegia ‘Black Barlow’ and hollyhocks Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’, ‘Black Beauty’ and ’Night Watchman’. For the front of the border you could grow Iris ‘Study in Black’, ‘Hello Darkness’ and ‘Paint it Black,’ Dianthus nigricans and D. ‘King of Black’ and the annual cornflowers ‘Black Ball’ and ‘Black Boy’. For shady corners there’s the mourning widow Geranium phaeum and the hellebore, Helleborus orientalis ‘Little Black’."

choosing loops

I can't seem to find the name of my favorite flower. Can you help?

It seems to have the stem and leaves of a spray carnation, and yet the petals are smooth edged and rounded. It is multi flowered per stem and each flower is full bloomed (my particular favorite is pale pink in color). Plus, it has a subtle sweet smell to it.

I can't seem to find the name of my favorite flower. Can you help?
that's a toughie. is it a cut flower?

I could think of a couple that might have the leaf configuration of carnations, but they are all in the dianthus family. Smooth petals could be one of a hundred daisies or lillies.

most flowers have a sweet scent..

could it be astromeria or osteospermum?

your question is well phrased and descriptive, but there are SO many possibilities.. sorry not to be more helpful.
Reply:can u provide us a picture. it will be very helpful.
Reply:Wow, that's a tough one. Are they a common garden plant or are you talking about one you'd order from the florist. The only thing I can think of is Snapdragon--that would be a garden plant. I'd do a web search of flower images.
Reply:Hi, you need the Royal Horticultural society web site, go for the plant ident section, Best if you can afford to joint first but they are not mean especially if it is a common plant. The fee is about £40 per year but you will be surprised what you can find there. I use it all the time. You could also try your local gardening club or your neighbours. Its a way to get to know them. PS Take a photograph they may be out of season when you find an answer so you will have something to compare with the answer.
Reply:peony?
Reply:You do get smooth-edged carnations as well as those that are 'pinked' (jagged). It is, in all probability either a Pink or a Carnation.
Reply:Maybe Pink Dianthus? It is in the carnation family.

Is there a flower called pygmalion?

I know the play is named after something from mythology, but someone told me it was also the name of a flower. Is this true?

Is there a flower called pygmalion?
Yes, it's a Rhododendron hybrid - Nobody knows just why this is; but Dexter got some of his reds from crosses involving a tender deep red hybrid ('Pygmalion'), a tender deep red species (R. haematodes), and a pink white-starred hybrid ('Wellfleet').
Reply:I think that you are confusing Pygmalion with Narcissus.

According to mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who sculpted a statue of an extremely beautiful young woman and fell in love with her.He named this woman Galatea...who was brought to life by Aphrodite, and married Pygmalion.

Narcissus on the other hand was a very handsome man who saw his own reflection in a pool and fell in love with his own reflection.....He was later changed into a flower, (also called Narcissus) by the gods.
Reply:They were both named for (or after) a Greek sculptor whose statue came to life.
Reply:If you are talking about the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw the work was inspired by the mythical sculptor Pygmalion. Professor Higgins "created" Eliza Doolittle, the same way that Pygmalion created Galatea.

Pygmalion is the Cypriotic form of Adonis who was a plant god so yes it is true.
Reply:have checked the encylopedia of gardening and there is no mention in there of course it may be the name of a specific plant type

How can I take wildflowers from the road, and put them in a flower bed?

There is about 15 different kinds of wildflowers that grow along my road, but my road is a dirt road so they get really dusty. i already took 12 wild roses but they are all in shock, but they will be ok next year. How can I take these other wildflowers and plant them in my flower bed? Just to name a few of the flowers, there are daisys, black eyed susans, fire weed, flowering maple, and this one type of small purple vine that looks like a mini wisteria. how can i do it, and make sure they are ok? oh, and its ok if its illegal, this is a dirt road that only gets about 20 cars a day. i tried to plant wildflowers from seed, and only about 5 small types of flowers came up, not the ones that were in the picture. it was the biggest waste of money i ever spent. oh, and one more question, is there any type of wildflower seed packets (or miracle gro stuff) that has many big flowers come up like snapdragons and is very full and colourful?

How can I take wildflowers from the road, and put them in a flower bed?
Dan,

Stop and think for a moment about your actions. Is it illegal? Yes!! Private property calls it invasion and theft.

Public Property brings Criminal Charges against you!

First a real Wildflower Bed needs development and plannning. Set aside an area you wish to have as such a garden in your yard. Make the proper provisions, such as the soil, irrigation availability, and a border to keep the plants in place. Wildflowers are really weeds that will take over if not contained my friend!

With the planning, backfill with any dirt you can and some compost or manure your set to go. Again, confine the area with either a stone or timber wall no less than three foot tall and make it a full surround. After planning and executing that project examine your real purpose.

Do I want a true wildflower garden or a garden I can be proud of and tend? I believe the later to be more true. Set the garden to be receptive to any planting this fall. Spend the time between then and spring to put a plan on paper. Make a gradious plan with a Specimen Tree surrounded by rare plants. Then get real and plan a garden that reflects your obvious goal of color through the season.

There are so many plants and so many zones in this country that plants can grow in. Write me back for the zone you are in. I am at gjgjobs@yahoo.com and welcome such a challenge.

I, after reading your post, would suggest making a raised bed using whatever is available to you. The plants I would use would be a Center Plant of Yucca, a background of Gereniums and a front of Midlandier Roses. All are cheap and available at any Nursery. Beats the hell out of trying to save monies and the bed will continue for years!

Good Luck. I am at gjgjobs@yahoo.com
Reply:No, it's not ok ..... it is illegal!

Most wild plants will die when moved and transplanted, believe me, I've tried many, many times with no success! Some of the plants you listed can easily be grown from seed or plants purchased at a nursery. Black Eyed Susan's only need to be planted once since they self propagate very easily. Those wildflower seed packets are usually not good and will contain more weed seeds than real flower seeds like you are wanting. You could make your own mixture of seeds. Buy packets of seeds that you like, mix them together and plant!
Reply:I would just dig them up and transplant them immediately. I would probably wait until closer to fall. You can enjoy them next year.
Reply:Quite apart from whether it is or is not legal, wild flowers are notoriously difficult to transplant I think. Cowslips, for example, will quite happily live in lawns or roadside verges, but won't survive in flower borders!
Reply:wildflowers are very difficult to translplant if not impossible for some climates. i would cut the tops or seed bearing areas and save them to plant next year....you'll have a nice suprise in the spring.

What is the common name for Datura Inoxia flower?

This is a large, white, night blooming flower in the form of an annual shrub, not to be confused with a vine of the morning glory family which is called moonflower. The blooms do not hang down like angel's trumpet.

What is the common name for Datura Inoxia flower?
Datura inoxia (angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache) is a species in the family Solanaceae. It is native to the Americas, and introduced in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The scientific name is often cited as D. innoxia.
Reply:Datura Inoxia is variously called angel's-trumpet, thorn-apple, downy thorn-apple, Indian-apple, moonflower, sacred datura, toloatzin, or toloache. Although it is not the same as the various plants you mentioned this is due to different people giving different plants the same name. If you want to be exact with any plant you'll have to use the latin name.
Reply:it is sometimes known as the Devils trumpet.
Reply:Angel trumpets.

The seedpod is called a Thornapple :)

Hope this helped you! :)

What is the name for a flower grown in the southern states on a bush during the summertime that is big?

it changes colors from green to whatever color it will be.

What is the name for a flower grown in the southern states on a bush during the summertime that is big?
hibiscus
Reply:Its a Hydrangea. The flowers start out green then change to either blue or pink depending on pH of the soil. Blue comes from acid soil %26amp; pink from alkaline or neutral. You can make the flowers pink by adding lime to the soil, or blue by adding aluminum sulfate.
Reply:Of the answers-- I think Rose of Sharon or crepe myrtle is the answer-- no other information to help identify the plant-- however the Rose of Sharon is a "old timey" plant-- you'll find it in areas where houses have been cleared for whatever reason-- especially around homesteaders home places. The flower looks like a hollyhock-- just one bloom at a time. It along with iris were two of the plants the pioneer women brought to the new land (Oklahoma) that were tough enough to survive-- providing some beauty to these remarkable women.

The crepe myrtle is the "lilac of the south" -- if not trimmed back in the dormant season, this flowering shrub will grow as tall as the eave of your house, although there is a dwarf version now. Colors range from white thru bright pink and finally a true red. You can trim up the branches (take off small branches from the ground up to where you want the flowers to be-- ) and the bark will peel in places making it interesting year round. Or you can just cut the whole thing back when dormant and get loads of blooms the next summer. The blooms themselves are small and look kinda like crepe paper flowers you made in school.-- hence the name-- but the flowers are all together on the end of the branch-- looking somewhat like a lilac.

Both the rose of sharon and the crepe myrtle have small leaves whereas the hydrangea has much larger leaves. Hydrangea likes mostly shade and crepe myrtle and rose of sharon like full sun.
